What does neurodivergent affirming couples therapy involve?
Your therapist will help you & your partner address whatever concerns are bringing you into couples therapy: communication challenges, sexual concerns, parenting, infidelity, ethical non-monogamy, or anything else. They will balance supporting you with these relationship concerns, in processing all the emotions that come with being a neurodivergent person, and also in building skills that will make your relationship feel more fulfilling.
Your therapist will support you and your partner with acceptance and self-understanding & with finding ways to cope with living in a neurotypical society.
In therapy, you and your therapist may work towards…
embracing your most authentic self (unmasking) in your relationship
processing trauma (traumatic invalidation, past unmet needs, relational trauma, etc) that impact your relationship
identifying relationship accommodations that can help you better integrate each other’s brain-based needs into the relationship
exploring your sexuality, in a way that supports your neurodivergence
improving your relationship
balancing caring for yourself and your partner’s needs
setting up systems in your relationship that help you get through the day to day requirements of living in this society
Your therapist will invite you both to show up as your authentic self. You are welcome to fidget, info-dump, share existential reflections, not have to make constant eye contact, talk about your passions, share in a way that makes sense for your brain, and anything else that makes you feel more at ease. We adapt typical couples therapy modalities to be more neuro-affirming.

Alicia offers coaching for neurodivergent folks!
Being newly diagnosed or identified as neurodivergent can be a time of confusion, grief, and discovery. You might feel alone, misunderstood, and like you don’t really know who you are without the mask. The amount of information out there can be both overwhelming and inaccurate. What I do is provide support to assist you with challenges that may come up as well as helping you implement ND affirming skills into your life. I’ve been there and struggled, not knowing where to turn, while trying to figure out where I fit in and how my life would change post-diagnosis.
