What is sexual trauma therapy like?
The first step to working through sexual trauma is building a relationship with your therapist that feels supportive and as safe as possible. Your therapist will get to know you (or you and your partner), your story, and your wants & hopes for therapy. They also begin to assess for how trauma is impacting your life.
Next, your therapist will help you build tools for coping with trauma triggers. This is important because processing trauma can be triggering and can be re-traumatizing if you don’t know how to identify when you’re triggered and don’t have ways to cope & soothe.
Then, if you feel ready, you may begin to process the trauma you’ve experienced. Your therapist will do this with intentionality and with the goal of helping you find new ways to relate to your trauma experience(s), better understand yourself, build up more self-compassion, and find pathways toward healing.
Finally, your therapist will help you reclaim pleasure, connect with your body and sexuality that feel good for you, and strengthen your relationship(s). This is when you’ll be integrating all you’ve discovered about yourself (and maybe you’re relationship) & working towards your individual, sexual, and/or relational goals.
